When Do You Need an Accountant for Your Business?

Accountant

Many small business owners start out managing their own accounts using spreadsheets or accounting software, especially when things are simple. And for a while, that might be fine. But as your business grows, your finances become more complex and the cost of making a mistake can quickly outweigh the cost of getting professional help.

An accountant isn’t just there to do your tax return. The right accountant can help you structure your business, stay compliant with IRD requirements, claim all eligible deductions, improve cash flow and plan for the future. In New Zealand, there are clear points in your business journey where having an accountant changes from being “nice to have” to a smart investment.

When do you Need to Bring in an Account?

  •  When starting out – Choosing the right business structure (sole trader, partnership, company) and setting up GST, IRD accounts and bookkeeping systems correctly.
  • When regeristing for GST – Especially as you approach the $60,000 turnover threshold, to understand filing requirements and avoid penalties.
  • At the end of the financial year – For preparing annual accounts, filing tax returns and ensuring you claim all legitimate deductions.
  • When your business is growing – More customers, staff or products can mean more complex payroll, tax planning and reporting.
  • When making major business decisions – Such as applying for finance, buying equipment, expanding or selling your business. Accountants can provide forecasts and cash flow advice to guide the decision.
  • If you’re short on time or confidence – Even if your business is small, outsourcing the accounts can free you up to focus on growth while knowing your finances are accurate and compliant.
